Piton de la Fournaise, positioned on the eastern side of Réunion island in the Indian Ocean, is a shield volcano. It presently ranks among the most active volcanoes globally, alongside Kīlauea in the Hawaiian Islands, Stromboli and Etna in Italy, and Mount Erebus in Antarctica. A preceding eruption took place from August 2006 to January 2007.
